The purpose of this class is to give participants insight into the aesthetic and technical aspects of producing a design binding. Students will develop their designs with reference to a text of their choosing, then work with maquettes to resolve technical issues. Students will not complete their bindings during the class; rather they should be able to go home with a firm idea of what to do and how to do it. This is not a leather binding workshop per se; exploring the potential of other materials and structures in response to the text is encouraged.

Participants will need a textblock. There are no other restrictions.

Requirements: Participants should be comfortable with all aspects of binding, but less advanced practitioners may feel the workshop would be of benefit. If so, please contact us. Students should bring their own hand tools, notebook and apron.  They will also need a paring knife if they expect to be working with leather.  If anyone has a Scharf-fix they are asked to bring it.

Dates: Monday, September 21 - Friday, September 25. If you are staying at the school please come late Sunday afternoon to get settled in.

Class status: 5 spaces available as of 11/17/08.
