class will introduce students first to a split board binding full leather binding which, after the first covering stage, can be separated, the outer leather-covered boards stamped and replaced, and finished like a normal tight-jointed binding. An article describing this binding can be found in The Bonefolder, vol. 4 no. 2.
The second binding is a variant of the slotted-spine vellum binding. The texblock is sewn on raised cords, then cased into Bradel type of paper case with slots in the spine to accommodate the bands, which are covered with leather. The case will be covered with paste paper and will have leather strips at head and tail edges.
Students should be comfortable both with case binding and with full leather binding, and will need to prepare two textblocks before class. The textblock for the full leather binding should be approximately 12 signatures with leather jointed endsheets, sewn on tapes or flat cords, and backed to ninety degree shoulders. Boarding up and subsequent steps will be done in class. The textblock for the second binding should also be approximately 12 signatures, but with endpaper sections without leather joints, sewn on raised cords and backed to forty-five degree shoulders. For detailed directions regarding the endpapers and preliminary steps, please contact the bindery. Students will need sufficient leather to cover the first book and for the patches over the raised cords and board edges of the second book. If anyone has a Scharf-fix please bring it. Standard hand tools and paring knife will be needed, as well as apron and notebook.
